Three Days is a Lifetime

Page 17

Everyone who saw Matthias loved him, Grandparents came, his aunt came.

We held him, changed his diaper, and we waited for the chromosomal testing to indicate whether his Trisomy 18 condition was mosaic or not. If it was mosaic, then some treatments might be possible, if not, the damage was terminal, surgery was not an option. When we got the confirmation of Trisomy 18, it was clear.

Matthias was fully Trisomy 18. He could have been the poster boy for Trisomy 18. Surgery would have been unsuccessful and caused him unnecessary pain.

At that point my mental focus changed I went from preservation and diagnosis to one of “Ok, we will love him as much as we can.”
